Investigation underway after student brings knife to Richland Elementary

Officials with the Richland School District say an investigation is underway after an elementary student reportedly brought a knife to school on Thursday.

School officials say the incident was addressed immediately and the district is working with local law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.

We are diligently assessing any potential threats posed and considering the student's past behavior as part of this process. I want to underscore that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority. We are working closely with law enforcement and relevant authorities to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address this matter effectively.

In a letter sent to members of the district, Richland's Director of Educational Services, Brandon Bailey, also addressed the issue of online rumors and spreading misinformation about the incident.

"In addition, I want to emphasize the importance of refraining from rumors or spreading misinformation regarding this incident. Clear, accurate communication is paramount during such times to avoid undue anxiety or confusion within our community."

School officials did not provide any details about the student who reportedly brought the weapon to school.

Authorities noted that the knife had an approximate three-inch blade.
