ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — The great outdoors beckoned folks to the Jaffa Shrine this weekend, for its yearly Sports Show. The event features local vendors who sell folks all sorts of outdoor supplies.
Those on the hunt for anything outdoors had a lot of options to choose from as the Sports Show returned.
"Sport Show's been going on for over 35 years now," the Sports Show's chairman, Buddy Daughenbaugh, told 6 News on Sunday.
"And it's just, like, a group of vendors that have...anything from turkey calls to -- you could buy guns, you can buy fishing lures."
Here, "family" is an important word.
"As you can see, there's a lot of family," Daughenbaugh said.
"This is a family-oriented event and a lot of stuff like that. Just to get people together and, more than anything, it's just to get kids off their computers and their iPads and get them into the outdoors."
The money from tickets goes to the Shrine, which they spend on charities.
The pandemic cancelled the Sports Show last year, but some regular faces at these booths were thrilled to be back.
"This is our 23rd year at the Sports Show," Howard Overcash, the owner of Overcash Foods Inc., told 6 News.
"So, this is like one of our biggest ventures that we do. We get to reach out to a lot of people that we normally wouldn't be able to."
Howard Overcash comes here to sell his hot sauce.
"Well, I got tired of vinegar in hot sauces. So, I made something that I liked, and I turned my friends on to it, and they said, 'You gotta try to sell that.' I'm like, 'Yeah, right!'"
23 years later, and he's selling hot sauces with quite the kick.
But for some vendors, profit isn't their aim.
"We're selling lots of tickets for this bike," Andrew Boyles, a vendor for Combat Vets Motorcycle, told 6 News.
"All the proceeds from this bike go back to local veterans."
Specifically, they help veterans with "bills, heating oil, building decks, home remodels, ramps... Anything that has to do with veterans to get around, that makes their life easier."
