The tractor-trailer, "failed to make a curve" from the I-81 North ramp to US 22 around 8 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler explained.
The trailer split open– along with hundreds of avocados, as they rolled, smooshed, and splattered onto the highway below.
The trailer was also dangling off the ramp but crews have been working to put it back on the roadway, which also caused the trailer to rupture open even further– spilling even more avocados.
As of 11:30 a.m., the tractor-trailer "is now completely on the bridge, which is a good thing because earlier it was hanging out over the parapet and was a danger to motorists below," Schreffler told Daily Voice.
Crews remain on the scene as "it will be a few hours still to complete removal of the TT and the avocados" from both highways, she said.
No injuries were reported, but many avocados perished before they could be spread on toast.
Motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes as the road remains closed.
